Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone several renovations, most notably in the 5th-6th and 17th-18th centuries. The main cathedral, constructed between 1216 and 1221, exemplifies the architectural style of the period, featuring a cruciform floor plan and an umbrella-shaped dome, a unique characteristic of Armenian churches. The monastery also housed a scriptorium, where numerous manuscripts were created and preserved.
