Discover more about Swan Lake

Swan Lake, nestled in the heart of Yerevan, is a picturesque and peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Officially known as Kukushkin Lake, this artificial lake was created in 1963 by architect Gevorg Musheghyan, as part of an effort to improve Yerevan's climate by introducing more water areas. The lake is named in honor of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's renowned ballet, "Swan Lake," due to its proximity to the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. Originally, the area where Swan Lake now sits was occupied by old, dilapidated houses. During the Soviet era, both black and white swans graced the lake's surface; however, they disappeared in the early 1990s. Graphically, Swan Lake is designed as a miniature replica of Lake Sevan, constructed with stone and concrete. The lake's surface area spans approximately 2490 square meters, with a capacity of 2400 cubic meters. The surrounding area is beautifully landscaped with willows and concrete paths that invite leisurely strolls. A charming island sits in the middle of the lake, connected to the pathways by a small bridge. Throughout the year, Swan Lake serves as a focal point for various community and cultural activities. Since 2005, the lake has been transformed into an ice-skating rink during the winter months, offering a delightful recreational activity. Near the lake, visitors can find the “Melody” sculpture, installed in 1965, and a monument to the composer Arno Babajanian, erected in 2003. Today, Swan Lake remains a cherished landmark, symbolizing Yerevan's commitment to preserving green spaces and fostering a vibrant cultural life.
