Discover more about Havuts Tar Monastery Complex

Havuts Tar Monastery, also known as Havuts Tar Vank, stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and cultural history. Located within the Khosrov State Reserve, near the villages of Garni and Goght, this partially ruined monastery complex dates back to the 11th to 13th centuries. The name "Havuts Tar" translates to "All Savior Monastery". According to legend, the monastery's foundation is attributed to Sahak Partev and Mesrop Mashtots in the 5th century, with significant reconstruction occurring in the 10th century. Historical accounts suggest that Gevorg Marzpetouni originally constructed the main chapel, Surb Amenaprkich (Savior Church), in the 10th century, later rebuilt in 1013 by Grigor Magistros. The monastery flourished as a religious, educational, and cultural center between the 12th and 14th centuries, becoming renowned for its manuscript writing. The oldest known manuscript from Havuts Tar is a Gospel dating back to 1214. Earthquakes in 1679 and 1840 caused severe damage, leading to the monastery's abandonment. While Catholicos Astvatsatur Hamadantsi initiated some reconstruction in the early 18th century, the complex never fully recovered. Today, Havuts Tar remains in a state of disrepair, offering visitors a unique glimpse into its medieval past. The monastery complex includes defensive walls, monks' chambers, a guesthouse, and two adjoined churches. The main chapel, though damaged, showcases a cross-dome, cylindrical drum, and central altar. Ruins of St. Karapet Church, an unfinished structure, are also present. Numerous khachkars (cross-stones) and inscriptions can be found throughout the site. Visitors can reach Havuts Tar via a trail from the Khosrov State Reserve entrance, a hike of approximately 30 minutes. The monastery's elevated location provides stunning views of the Azat River Gorge, Garni Temple, and surrounding landscapes.
