Lake Sevan: The Jewel of Armenia

Lake Sevan, often called the "Jewel of Armenia," is a vast and beautiful high-altitude lake that dominates the Armenian landscape. As the largest lake in the Caucasus, it holds immense ecological, cultural, and recreational significance. The lake's shimmering surface, reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks, creates a mesmerizing panorama that changes with the weather, from dazzling azure to deep blue. Historically, Lake Sevan was one of the three great "Seas of Armenia". In the past, the lake was larger, but during the Soviet era, its water level was lowered for irrigation and hydroelectric power, causing significant changes to its ecosystem. Today, efforts are underway to restore the lake's water level and preserve its natural beauty. The lake is fed by 28 rivers and streams, with only one river, the Hrazdan, flowing out. The surrounding area is part of the Sevan National Park, known for its diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the park's hiking trails, enjoy the pebble beaches, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. One of the most iconic landmarks on Lake Sevan is the Sevanavank Monastery, located on a peninsula that was once an island. Founded in 874 AD, the monastery offers stunning views of the lake and houses ancient khachkars (Armenian cross-stones). Other attractions around the lake include the Hayravank Monastery, Noratus Cemetery with its ancient khachkars, and the charming town of Sevan. Lake Sevan is a popular summer destination, offering opportunities for swimming, windsurfing, sailing, and boat tours. Visitors can also enjoy fresh fish from the lake at local restaurants and explore the surrounding cultural and historical sites.
