Discover more about Kobayr Monastery Complex

The Kobayr Monastery Complex, located near the town of Tumanyan in Armenia's Lori Province, is a remarkable historical and religious site dating back to the 12th century. Founded as a priory in 1171 by Mariam, the daughter of King Kiurike II, the complex expanded under the Zakarian noble family in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The name Kobayr is believed to be derived from the Georgian word “kob” and the Armenian word “ayr,” both meaning “cave,” reflecting the numerous caverns in the area. Kobayr was once a prominent spiritual, cultural, and literary center in Northern Armenia. The Zakarians converted the monastery to Chalcedonian faith, leading to a unique blend of Armenian and Georgian influences. This is evident in the architecture and the presence of both Armenian and Georgian inscriptions on the walls. The complex includes the Cathedral of Mother Mary, the Mariamashen Church (built in 1171), and a belfry-sepulcher dating back to 1279, which uniquely combines a bell tower and a burial site. The monastery is particularly renowned for its stunning frescoes, which showcase Byzantine-style art from the 11th century. These frescoes, found in the Big Church and the Chapel/Aisle, depict scenes of Madonna and baby Jesus with archangels, the Eucharist, and various saints. The Zakarians introduced this new architectural style, with elements commonly found in Georgian churches. This was a departure from the more minimalist decoration of the interior of Armenian churches. Today, the Kobayr Monastery Complex is accessible by foot via the village of Kober. The site is undergoing renovation with the assistance of the Armenian and Italian governments. Visitors can explore the ruins, admire the partially restored frescoes, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Debed Canyon. The monastery also serves as the starting point for a popular hiking trail that leads to the village of Odzun via the Horomayr Monastery.
