Discover more about Avetik Isahakyan House-Museum

The Avetik Isahakyan House-Museum in Gyumri is dedicated to preserving the legacy of one of Armenia's most cherished poets and writers. The museum is located in the paternal home of Avetik Isahakyan, built in 1828 by the poet's grandfather. It opened its doors as a memorial museum on October 29, 1975, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Isahakyan's birth. The house-museum suffered significant damage during the devastating 1988 earthquake. In the early 1990s, the original structure was demolished with plans to reconstruct it in a similar architectural style. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the reconstruction project was put on hold for over a decade. In 2002, the Shirak Regional Administration revitalized the restoration efforts, and the museum was reopened to the public. The restored house-museum was designed to mirror its original appearance, relying on descriptions from the poet's relatives in 1957. Visitors can explore the rooms where Isahakyan spent his childhood, including his study, guest room, and even the traditional bakery (tonratun) and cellar, all carefully restored to reflect the atmosphere of his time. The exhibits feature Isahakyan's personal belongings, such as his clothes, writing desk, and favorite coffee-making bowl, offering insights into his daily life and creative process. The museum also provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of affluent families in Gyumri during the late 19th century.
