Discover more about The Gallery of Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan Sisters

The Gallery of Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan Sisters stands as a testament to the remarkable talent and legacy of two of Armenia's most beloved artists. Opened in 1987 in their native Gyumri, the gallery holds the most extensive collection of their works, with over 600 original paintings, ceramics, and graphic pieces donated by the sisters themselves. The gallery is housed in a charming two-story building dating back to 1880, originally the private residence of the wealthy Keshishov family. The architecture reflects the 19th-century urban style of Alexandropol (now Gyumri), blending European and traditional Armenian elements. After the devastating 1988 earthquake, the building temporarily sheltered homeless residents before reopening as a gallery in 2004. Inside, the gallery is divided to showcase each sister's distinct artistic vision. The first floor is dedicated to Eranuhi's works, known for her intimate and sensual style, particularly in ceramics. The second floor features Mariam's creations, including her vibrant paintings and portraits reflecting her global travels and interest in depicting women of different cultures. Their art evolved within and beyond the officially-sanctioned socialist-realist style. Both sisters traveled extensively, and their work reflects this global exposure. The Aslamazyan sisters broke conventions in the male-dominated Soviet visual art world. Their art promoted gender equality and highlighted the role of female artists in Soviet-Armenian society.
