Alinja Castle: The Machu Picchu of Azerbaijan

Alinja Castle, also known as Alinjagala, is a historical fortress located in the Julfa District of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. Often dubbed the 'Machu Picchu of Azerbaijan' or 'Eurasia's Machu Picchu', this impressive structure sits atop Alinja Mountain, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The castle's history dates back centuries, with mentions in historical records as early as the 1st century. It served as a defensive stronghold for various dynasties, including the Armenian lords of Syunik, the Bagratuni dynasty, and later the Turkic Ildegizids. The fortress was renowned for its strategic location and formidable defenses, which allowed it to withstand numerous sieges, including a 14-year siege by Tamerlane in the 14th century. Legend says that Tamerlane used the castle to house his treasury. Today, Alinja Castle has been partially reconstructed to showcase its medieval layout. Visitors can explore the restored walls, towers, and other structures, gaining insight into the castle's historical significance and architectural design. A museum at the base of the mountain displays artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations, providing further context to the site's rich past. Reaching the castle requires a challenging climb of approximately 1500 steps, but the stunning views from the top make the effort worthwhile.
