    Discover more about Gndevank

Gndevank Monastery, an often-overlooked treasure, is situated near the village of Gndevaz in the Vayots Dzor Province. Founded in 936 AD by Princess Sofia, the wife of Prince Smbat of Syunik, the monastery was built to provide a spiritual sanctuary for the local population. Princess Sofia immortalized the monastery with the inscription, “Vayots Dzor was a ring without a stone; I built this monastery as the stone for that ring,” which speaks to the monastery's significance in the region. The monastery complex includes the Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), chapels, cells, and a refectory. Constructed from finely hewn basalt, the church follows a cross-in-square plan, featuring a central dome and four apses. Inside, fragments of bas-reliefs depict Christ and the Virgin Mary, and the dome's interior showcases rare carvings of the four Evangelists' symbols. The courtyard features khachkars (cross-stones) dating from the 10th to 16th centuries and cradle-shaped tombstones. Despite being partially destroyed in 1604 by Persian Shah Abbas, Gndevank was rebuilt in 1691, with Abbot Petros fortifying the monastery with high walls, dwelling rooms, and utility structures. Today, Gndevank stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and cultural heritage, offering visitors a tranquil escape into the country's ancient past. Its remote location provides a sense of serenity, inviting quiet reflection amidst the beauty of the Armenian countryside.
