Discover more about Halidzor Fortress

Perched on a rugged hill overlooking the Voghji River, Halidzor Fortress is a powerful symbol of Armenian history and resistance. Originally built in the 17th century as a convent, it later transformed into a formidable fortress under the leadership of Davit Bek in the 1720s. This strategic location became a crucial stronghold in the fight against Ottoman and Persian invasions. Halidzor Fortress played a vital role in the Armenian liberation struggle, serving as Davit Bek's headquarters. In the 1720s, Davit Bek, along with 300 soldiers, 13 bishops, and 3 priests, defended the fortress for seven days against a 70,000-strong Ottoman army. The fortress's natural defenses and strategic design allowed the Armenian forces to repel repeated attacks. A secret tunnel to the Voghji River provided a vital water supply during sieges. Visitors can explore the ruins of the fortress, including the remains of the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother), barracks, and defensive towers. The fortress walls, though partially ruined, still evoke a sense of its past glory. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the Voghji River, rewarding those who make the trek.
