Getting There

  • Car

    From Kapan, head east on the Goris-Kapan highway (M2) for approximately 6 km until the turnoff for Halidzor. Turn left onto the road leading to Halidzor village and continue for about 3 km until you see a sign for Halidzor Fortress. Park in the designated area near the entrance and walk the remaining path to the fortress. Note that the road can be uneven, so a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. There are no parking fees.

  • Public Transport

    From Kapan's bus station, take a marshrutka (minibus) to Halidzor village. Marshrutkas depart frequently. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes. From Halidzor village, you can walk to the fortress (approximately 1.5 km uphill hike) or hire a local taxi. The marshrutka fare is around 200 AMD. A taxi from the village to the fortress should cost around 1500-2000 AMD.

Originally built in the 17th century as a convent, it later transformed into a formidable fortress under the leadership of Davit Bek in the 1720s. This strategic location became a crucial stronghold in the fight against Ottoman and Persian invasions.Halidzor Fortress played a vital role in the Armenian liberation struggle, serving as Davit Bek's headquarters. In the 1720s, Davit Bek, along with 300 soldiers, 13 bishops, and 3 priests, defended the fortress for seven days against a 70,000-strong Ottoman army. The fortress's natural defenses and strategic design allowed the Armenian forces to repel repeated attacks. A secret tunnel to the Voghji River provided a vital water supply during sieges.Visitors can explore the ruins of the fortress, including the remains of the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother), barracks, and defensive towers. The fortress walls, though partially ruined, still evoke a sense of its past glory. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the Voghji River, rewarding those who make the trek. It's a place to reflect on the courage and resilience of the Armenian people and their enduring fight for independence.
