    Discover more about Old Khot

Old Khot, also known as Hin Khot, is a captivating historical site located in the Syunik region of Armenia. Often called the Armenian Machu Picchu, this ancient village is nestled on the steep cliffs of the Vorotan River at an altitude of 1500 meters. The name 'Khot' derives from the Armenian word for 'herbage' or 'grass'. Occupied since the 2nd century BC, Old Khot boasts a rich history, with early inhabitants dwelling in caves carved into the volcanic tuff rock. Over time, these cave dwellings were expanded with stone structures, creating the illusion of houses emerging directly from the cliffs. The village is first mentioned in historical chronicles in the 5th century when Prince Babik of Syunik gifted Khot to the Persian general Gori upon his conversion to Christianity. In the 11th century, the historian Stepanos Orbelian noted it as a tax-paying settlement under the jurisdiction of the Tatev Monastery. Old Khot thrived for centuries, boasting landmarks such as the Khoti Vank monastery dedicated to St. Astvatsatsin, the Mrgadzori Khach church constructed in the 17th century, and a castle named Khanapa. The village was also known as Zangezur, meaning 'land of bells,' due to its renowned church bells. Social changes in the 20th century led to the village's abandonment. In the 1960s and 70s, residents were relocated to a new settlement on a plateau closer to the main road, now known as Khot. Today, Old Khot stands as a ghost town, attracting visitors with its scenic views and historical significance. Explorers can wander through the ruins, marvel at the unique architecture, and witness the blending of nature and history. The village provides insights into Armenia's past and present, offering a realm where nature intertwines with history and mystery harmonizes with beauty.
