    Discover more about Saghmosavank

Saghmosavank Monastery, located in the village of Saghmosavan in the Aragatsotn Province, offers a captivating blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Founded in the 13th century by Prince Vache Vachutyan, the monastery's name derives from 'saghmos,' the Armenian word for psalm, reflecting its historical importance as a place where spiritual songs were composed and sung. The monastery complex comprises several significant structures. The main church, dedicated to Saint Zion, was built in 1215 and exemplifies Armenian cross-domed architecture with two-story vestries. The gavit (narthex), constructed in the first quarter of the 13th century, connects the church to the repository of manuscripts. This repository, built in 1255, served as a library and housed a collection of invaluable manuscripts. The Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), built in 1235, is accessible through the repository and features a unique altar. Saghmosavank's strategic location atop the Kasakh River gorge provides breathtaking panoramic views. The monastery was a significant spiritual, cultural, and educational center in medieval Armenia. It suffered damage during the 1988 earthquake but was meticulously restored in 2000, preserving its architectural heritage. Today, Saghmosavank stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and cultural past, attracting visitors with its serene atmosphere and remarkable architecture.
