Discover more about Sanahin Monastery Complex

The Sanahin Monastery Complex, located near Alaverdi in the Lori Province of Armenia, is a remarkable example of medieval Armenian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in the 10th century, its name, according to legend, translates to "this one is older than that one," possibly referencing its slightly older age compared to the nearby Haghpat Monastery. Originally intended as a haven for monks fleeing Byzantine persecution, Sanahin quickly evolved into a significant spiritual, educational, and cultural hub. King Ashot III Voghormats initiated the complex in 966, and it later became the administrative center and family mausoleum of the Kyurikyan dynasty. The monastery flourished as a center of learning, boasting a rich library and a school that later became an academy, nurturing prominent Armenian scholars during the Middle Ages. The complex comprises several key structures, including the Church of the Holy Mother of God (St. Astvatsatsin), the Church of the Holy Savior (St. Amenaprkich), the Chapel of St. Gregory, a scriptorium, an academy, and various sepulchers and bell towers. The St. Astvatsatsin Church, built between 928 and 944, is one of the oldest structures, featuring a unique cruciform dome design. The St. Amenaprkich Church, constructed in 966, is the largest building in the complex and stands out with its impressive size and two-story apses. The academy is believed to be where Grigor Magistros, a renowned 11th-century Armenian philosopher, lectured. Throughout its history, Sanahin played a vital role in Armenia's spiritual and cultural life. The monastery houses numerous khachkars, intricately carved cross-stones, including masterpieces by Grigor Tutevordi and Sargis. These structures, constructed primarily from local light gray polished basalt, showcase a harmonious architectural balance. Today, Sanahin Monastery continues to attract visitors with its historical significance and stunning architecture.
