Discover more about Smbataberd

Smbataberd, meaning "Fortress of Smbat," is a prominent medieval fortress in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province. Situated between the villages of Artabuynk and Yeghegis, the fortress sits atop a hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding valleys. The fortress is one of the largest in the Syunik region. While some sources suggest construction during the 9th to 11th centuries, evidence indicates it may have existed as early as the 5th century, playing a role in the Avarayr battle between Armenians and Persians. It was significantly fortified in the 10th century and further expanded in the 13th century by the Orbelian dynasty. The fortress served as the primary military bastion for the fortified town of Yeghegis and the surrounding areas. Smbataberd's design reflects medieval military architecture, stretching nearly a kilometer in length. A dividing wall separates the fortress into northern and southern sections, each with its own acropolis. Remnants of barracks and cisterns have been discovered within both sections. The main gates, constructed from basalt, were strategically located on the northeast, northwest, and northern sides. Legend says the fortress is named after either a duke of the Orbelian dynasty or Prince Smbat of Syunik from the 10th century. The fortress was nearly impenetrable due to its high altitude, steep slopes, and surrounding walls. It was captured only once, when Seljuk Turks cut off the water supply. Today, the well-preserved basalt walls, towers and keep attract tourists.
