Shor Aghbyur Spring: A Refreshing Landmark in Tegh

Shor Aghbyur, translating to "Salty Spring", is more than just a water source; it's a historical and cultural landmark in the village of Tegh, nestled in the Syunik Province of Armenia. Located about 20 km from Goris, this spring has quenched the thirst of locals for centuries. The spring's history dates back to at least the 10th century when Queen Shahandukht of Syunik developed the village and gifted it to the Tatev Monastery in 988. Shor Aghbyur has been one of the largest and most well-known springs in the area. The current structure dates back to the 17th century, with renovations in 1932, as indicated by an inscription on the facade. The spring is constructed from rough-hewn local stone and features a tin roof supported by the walls and a central pillar, dividing the facade into two sections. Three niches adorn the facade, with another on the right side, all bearing traces of candle lighting, indicating its sacred significance. The spring water flows into seven interconnected troughs, with the first six featuring stylized edges. In recent years, a drinking water pumping station was constructed near the spring in 2021-2022, highlighting its continued importance to the community.
