Gavazan: A Spiritual Retreat in Tatev

Getting There

• Walking

  From the main entrance of Tatev Monastery, head south towards the main courtyard. Continue through the courtyard until you reach the edge of the monastery complex. From here, take the path that leads east toward Gavazan. As you walk, look for signs indicating the direction to Gavazan, which is approximately a 10-minute walk from the monastery. The path is well-marked and offers beautiful views of the surrounding area.

• Cable Car

  If you prefer a scenic route, you can take the Wings of Tatev cable car from the Tatev Monastery area. The cable car station is located near the monastery entrance. Purchase a ticket at the station; the round trip ticket costs approximately 5,000 AMD (about $10 USD). The cable car will take you to the other side of the Vorotan River, providing stunning views along the way. After arriving at the opposite station, you can hike back to Gavazan, which is a short 15-minute walk from the cable car station.

• Private Car/Taxi

  If you have access to a car or would like to hire a taxi, you can drive to the coordinates 97H2+P58, H45, Tatev 3218. From Tatev Monastery, drive south on the main road (H45) for about 2 kilometers. Look for signs indicating Gavazan. The drive will take around 5 minutes. Ensure to park your vehicle in designated areas and walk to Gavazan, which is located just a short distance from the parking area.

• Public Transportation

  If you're relying on public transportation, you can catch a marshrutka (minibus) that operates between Tatev Monastery and the nearby villages. However, public transport may not take you directly to Gavazan. Instead, you can take a marshrutka to the nearest village and then walk to Gavazan, which is about 1.5 kilometers away. Be sure to check the local schedule as marshrutkas may not run frequently. It's advisable to ask locals for assistance with directions.
