Discover more about Makaravank Monastery Complex

The Makaravank Monastery Complex, located near the village of Achajur in the Tavush Province, is a remarkable testament to Armenia's medieval architectural heritage. Situated on the slopes of Mount Paitatap, the complex dates back to the 10th-13th centuries and comprises several significant structures, including four churches, a narthex, and residential buildings. The complex is constructed primarily of pink andesite and red tuff stone, with occasional use of greenish stones, creating a unique and harmonious blend with the surrounding natural landscape. The oldest structure is the 10th-11th century church, distinguished by its intricately carved ornamentation. The main church, built in 1205, features a domed structure and elaborate carvings, including an eagle holding a calf, sphinxes, and sirens. The Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church, constructed in 1198 from white stone, adds further architectural diversity to the complex. According to legend, the monastery was founded by a man named Makar, who, along with his son, dedicated himself to building the church. The monastery served as an important educational center, housing a library that preserved and promoted Armenian culture and language during the Middle Ages. Although no longer used for regular services, Makaravank remains a popular destination for those seeking to explore Armenia's rich past and admire its architectural treasures.
