Hnevank Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Sanctuary

Hnevank, meaning "Old Monastery," is a testament to Armenia's enduring spiritual legacy. Located near the village of Kurtan in the Lori Province, the monastery occupies a strategic position atop a hill within a gorge, where the Dzoraget and Gargar rivers converge.Founded between the 7th and 12th centuries, the complex comprises three churches, a gavit (a type of narthex), and various ancillary buildings. The main church, believed to have been constructed in the 7th century, exhibits a unique architectural style, featuring a rectangular exterior and a cross-shaped interior. Its dome boasts an octagonal drum adorned with sculpted arches.In 1154, the monastery underwent restoration by Prince Smbat of the Orbelyan dynasty, as evidenced by a Georgian inscription on the dome. This inscription has led to some historical debate, with Georgian historians suggesting a Georgian origin for the monastery, though the Armenian architectural style and historical context strongly suggest otherwise. The presence of Georgian inscriptions is attributed to Georgia's regional influence during that era.One notable characteristic of Hnevank is the absence of khachkars (Armenian cross-stones), which is unusual for Armenian monasteries and may indicate Chalcedonian affiliations in its earlier history. Today, the monastery is partially dilapidated, though the Armenian government has undertaken renovation efforts, including the complete restoration of the main church's dome.
