Tsakhats Kar Monastery: Blooming Stones in Vayots Dzor

Nestled in the mountains of the Vayots Dzor province, near the village of Horbategh, lies the historic Tsakhats Kar Monastery, a testament to Armenia's medieval religious and cultural heritage. The name "Tsakhats Kar," meaning "Blooming Stone," possibly originates from the lush orchards that were once granted to the monastery in the 11th and 13th centuries. The monastery is located a short distance from the village of Yeghegis and the fortress of Smbataberd. The complex is divided into two distinct groups of structures, separated by approximately 200 meters. The western group, constructed of rough-hewn basalt, is now largely in ruins. The eastern group, built in 1041, is better preserved and includes the domed Church of Saint Karapet, known for its architectural clarity and restrained reliefs. Another notable structure is the Church of the Holy Virgin, dating back to the 10th century. Visitors can explore the grounds and discover the intricate carvings and khachkars (Armenian cross-stones) that adorn the churches and surrounding cemetery. The monastery's architecture showcases unique rectangular domes characteristic of Armenian church design. The remains of workshops and oil presses offer a glimpse into the monastery's past as a self-sustaining feudal institution. A notable feature within the St. Karapet Church is a large relief depicting a lion and bull locked in combat. Tsakhats Kar was also a medieval educational institution where painting was studied. The monastery's strategic location in the mountains suggests it served as a stronghold during turbulent times, guarding the capital of the Syunik principality.
