Discover more about Smbataberd

Smbataberd, meaning "Fortress of Smbat," is a majestic medieval stronghold located between the villages of Artabuynk and Yeghegis in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. The fortress dates back to at least the 5th century, with some sources suggesting it may have existed even earlier. It was strategically fortified in the 10th century and further expanded in the 13th century. Positioned on a narrow, rocky ridge, the fortress is naturally defended by steep slopes and deep gorges on three sides. The main walls, constructed from large basalt stones, are reinforced with semicircular towers. A dividing wall splits the fortress into northern and southern sections, each with its own acropolis. Remnants of barracks and cisterns can still be found within the fortress. Smbataberd served as the primary military bastion for the fortified town of Yeghegis and the surrounding areas. It was a critical defensive and administrative center and has served as the residence for the ruling princes and a strategic military stronghold. According to legend, the fortress was captured only once, when Seljuk Turks cut off the water supply. The fortress was restored in 2007 and is now a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the well-preserved walls, enjoy panoramic views, and imagine life in medieval Armenia.
