If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Yeghegnadzor, which is the main town in Vayots Dzor. From Yeghegnadzor, head east on the M2 highway towards Artabuynk. After approximately 14 kilometers, you'll reach the village of Artabuynk. As you enter the village, look for signs directing you to Smbataberd. The fortress is located about 3 kilometers from the center of the village, on a hill. You can park your car at the base of the hill and prepare for a short hike up to the fortress.

To reach Smbataberd via public transport, start from Yeghegnadzor and take a minibus (marshrutka) heading towards Artabuynk. The fare is typically around 500 AMD. Once you arrive in Artabuynk, you can ask locals for the direction to Smbataberd. It is a 3-kilometer walk to the fortress from the village. You may choose to hire a local taxi to take you closer for a small fee, usually around 1000-1500 AMD, if you're not comfortable walking.
