Discover more about Hooiberg

Hooiberg, a volcanic formation rising 541 feet (165 meters) above sea level, is one of Aruba's most recognizable landmarks. Located in the center of the island near Santa Cruz, it's visible from nearly any point and has become a symbol of Aruba, even featured on the Aruban Coat of Arms. The name 'Hooiberg,' Dutch for 'haystack,' likely originated from its resemblance to a haystack. Historically, the hill served as a lookout point for the indigenous Arawak people and early European settlers. Geologists have discovered that Hooiberg is made up of a unique variety of quartz diorite, named Hooibergiet, found only on Aruba. The main attraction is the climb to the summit via a well-maintained concrete staircase. Originally built in 1951 with 900 steps, the staircase was renovated in 1990 and now consists of approximately 587 steps. Along the way, there is a gazebo about a third of the way up that provides a resting point. The hike is considered moderate, taking about 30-60 minutes. From the top, hikers are rewarded with 360-degree views of Aruba, and on a clear day, it is possible to see the coast of Venezuela.
