Discover more about Alto Vista Chapel

Alto Vista Chapel, also known as the 'Pilgrim's Church,' is a cherished landmark on Aruba's north shore, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and spiritual significance. The original chapel was built in 1750 by Caquetio natives and Spanish settlers under the guidance of Venezuelan missionary Domingo Antonio Silvestre, becoming the first Catholic church on the island. Dedicated to Mother St. Mary, it served as a center for worship and the conversion of native Arubans. Tragedy struck when a plague devastated the area, leading to the chapel's abandonment and eventual ruin by 1816. However, in the 1950s, a local schoolteacher named Francisca Henriques Lacle spearheaded its restoration, culminating in the rebuilt chapel's completion between March and May 1952. Today, the bright yellow chapel with its terracotta tiled roof stands out against the arid landscape, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and the Caribbean Sea. Inside, the chapel features a modest yet elegant interior with polished wooden pews and an altar adorned with religious paintings and statues. The serene atmosphere invites contemplation and reflection. Visitors can also explore the adjacent Peace Labyrinth, designed for meditation and inner peace. The chapel holds weekly services on Tuesdays at 5:30 PM and is a focal point for the annual Feast of Santa Filomena pilgrimage on January 18th. The winding road leading to the chapel is marked with crosses, representing the Stations of the Cross, adding to the spiritual ambiance.
