Hooiberg: Aruba's Iconic Haystack Mountain

Hooiberg stands as a prominent landmark in Aruba, easily visible from nearly any point on the island. Though not the highest point (that honor belongs to Mount Jamanota), its central location and accessible staircase make it a favorite destination for breathtaking panoramic views. The mountain's name, Hooiberg, is Dutch for 'haystack,' likely derived from its shape. Historically, the Arawak people, Aruba's indigenous inhabitants, considered the site sacred, using it for gatherings and ceremonies. In the 19th century, it served as a surveying point and lookout. A depiction of Hooiberg is even featured on Aruba's Coat of Arms, symbolizing the island rising from the sea. The climb to the summit involves ascending approximately 587 concrete steps. Along the way, you'll find a gazebo offering a resting point and shade. The mountain is covered in cacti, divi-divi trees, and kibrahacha trees, which bloom with yellow flowers after rainfall. Geologists have identified a unique type of quartz diorite found only in Aruba, named Hooibergiet after the mountain. From the summit, you can witness Aruba's diverse landscape, including its rocky shores, lush valleys, and the sparkling Caribbean Sea. On a clear day, it's even possible to spot the coast of Venezuela.
