Curtain Fig National Park, located on the Atherton Tableland near Yungaburra, is a sanctuary for the endangered Mabi rainforest and home to the renowned Curtain Fig Tree. This natural wonder began its life approximately 500 years ago as a tiny seed dropped high in the canopy of another tree. As a strangler fig (Ficus virens), it sent aerial roots down to the forest floor, gradually thickening and intertwining. Over centuries, these roots strangled the host tree, causing it to fall against a neighboring tree, a unique stage in this fig's development. The vertical roots then formed a distinctive 'curtain-like' appearance, and the host trees eventually rotted away, leaving the freestanding fig tree.The tree now stands nearly 50 meters tall, with a trunk circumference of 39 meters. Its extensive aerial roots create a breathtaking curtain effect, dropping 15 meters to the ground. The park's elevated boardwalk allows visitors to view the fig from all angles while protecting its delicate root system. The Mabi forest itself is an endangered ecosystem, characterized by semi-deciduous canopy trees that allow more light to reach the forest floor, supporting a well-developed shrub layer.Visitors can explore the park via a short, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that loops around the tree. The park is open 24 hours a day and is free to enter. At night, the park offers opportunities for spotlighting, where visitors may glimpse nocturnal animals such as leaf-tailed geckos and Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos. The park's history reflects changing attitudes towards North Queensland's rainforests, from being dismissed as 'scrub' in the 1890s to becoming a celebrated natural wonder and a part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in 1988.
