Mamu Tropical Skywalk: A Rainforest Canopy Adventure

Venture into the heart of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area at the Mamu Tropical Skywalk, an eco-tourism experience located in the Wooroonooran National Park. Just a 90-minute drive south of Cairns, or 30 minutes from Innisfail, this attraction offers a breathtaking journey through the rainforest canopy.The Skywalk features a 350-meter-long elevated walkway that rises up to 15 meters above the ground, winding through the lush rainforest canopy. This allows visitors to observe rainforest plants, insects, and birds up close. For panoramic views, ascend the 37-meter-high observation tower, which offers sweeping vistas of the North Johnstone River gorge and surrounding rainforest-clad peaks. A 10-meter cantilever extends over the gorge, providing tantalizing views.In addition to the elevated structures, over 1100 meters of forest walking tracks connect the Skywalk, cantilever, and tower, offering a ground-level perspective of the rainforest. Informative signs along the paths detail the rainforest's complex ecosystem and the rich cultural history of the area.The Mamu Tropical Skywalk was built in 2007, carefully designed to minimize environmental impact. The walkway was constructed in natural clearings left by Cyclone Larry in 2006, using durable, unpainted galvanized steel and recycled plastic. The area has a rich history, from early logging to its current status as a protected World Heritage site. The traditional owners of the land are the Ma Mu Aboriginal people, whose cultural heritage is interwoven with the rainforest.The Skywalk is designed to be accessible, with wheelchair and stroller-friendly paths (except for the top of the observation tower).
