The Nepalese Peace Pagoda, located in Brisbane's South Bank Parklands, offers a serene escape from the bustling city. Originally built for World Expo '88, it's the only remaining international exhibit from the event, gifted by the Kingdom of Nepal. The pagoda was designed by German architect Jochen Reier and constructed using 80 tons of Nepalese timber, hand-carved by 160 families over two years.One of only three such temples outside Nepal, the pagoda closely resembles the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. It features Hindu and Buddhist symbols, including depictions of Shiva and meditating Buddhas. Visitors can admire the Peace Bell, side pavilions, and a Buddhist stupa. Sanskrit prayers and the 'om' symbol are inscribed on the pavilion roofs.While not a traditional religious center, the pagoda hosts occasional events and welcomes visitors for personal meditation. Its tranquil gardens, complete with a pond and fountain, offer stunning city views. The pagoda stands as a symbol of peace and cultural exchange between Nepal and Australia.
