Discover more about Queensland Parliament

Queensland Parliament House, situated at the corner of George and Alice Streets in Brisbane, stands as a testament to the state's rich political history and architectural grandeur. Since its opening in 1868, it has been the center of Queensland's unicameral government. Designed by Colonial Architect Charles Tiffin, the building showcases a French Renaissance Revival style, characterized by sandstone colonnades and an interior courtyard. The building replaced temporary chambers in former convict barracks. Inside, the rooms are ornately decorated, featuring original, purpose-made furniture crafted from Queensland yellowwood and cedar. Visitors can explore the Legislative Assembly Chamber, adorned in dark green in the Westminster style. Free guided tours are available on weekdays, offering insights into the building's history and the workings of Queensland's democracy. On sitting days, the public can observe parliamentary proceedings from the gallery. Queensland Parliament is unique as the only Australian state parliament with a single chamber since the abolition of the Legislative Council in 1922. The former Council Chamber, known as the Red Chamber, is now used for committee hearings and ceremonial events. The Parliament's grounds are adjacent to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Queensland University of Technology, making it a central landmark in the city. Strangers' Restaurant, located within Parliament House, offers a fine dining experience, serving contemporary Queensland cuisine in a historically significant setting.
