Discover more about Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park

Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park, located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, offers a stunning landscape carved by the Lennard River over millions of years. The park's centerpiece is the 3.5-kilometer-long Windjana Gorge, with walls rising up to 100 meters. These walls are part of the Napier Range and are composed of a 375-million-year-old Devonian reef system, containing fossilized marine life. The gorge is not only a geological wonder but also a significant site for the local Bunuba people. Known as Bandilngan to the Bunuba, it is a spiritual place where they believe ancient creation spirits reside. The park was also a strategic stronghold during the Bunuba resistance against European settlers in the 1890s, led by Jandamarra. Visitors can explore the gorge via several walking trails, including the 3.5km Gorge Trail. Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles basking in the pools, corellas and fruit bats roosting in the trees, and the diverse plant life along the riverbanks. The park also features the ruins of Lillimooloora Station, a historic pastoral homestead and police outpost. Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park is best visited during the dry season, from May to November, when the weather is mild and the roads are accessible. Camping is available at the Windjana Gorge Camp, which offers basic amenities such as toilets, showers, and fire pits.
