Car
If you're traveling by car, ensure you have a reliable 4WD vehicle as the roads can be rough, especially during the wet season. From the main town of Weipa, take the Northern Highway heading north. Follow the signs for the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR), which will lead you to the northern tip of Cape York. The journey can take approximately 5-6 hours depending on road conditions. Make sure to stop at Bramwell Junction for fuel and supplies, as there are limited services along the way.
Public Transport
For those using public transport, the best option is to take a bus from Cairns to Weipa. Several companies operate this route, but be sure to check the schedules in advance as they may not run daily. Once in Weipa, you will need to arrange a local tour or hire a 4WD vehicle to reach Cape York, as public transport does not extend to the northern areas. Costs will vary based on the tour company, but expect to pay around AUD 200-$300 for a day trip to Cape York.
Tour Operator
Another option is to book a guided tour from Cairns that includes transportation to Cape York. Many tour operators offer multi-day trips which include accommodation and meals. This is a great way to experience the area with knowledgeable guides. Prices typically range from AUD 1000 to AUD 2000, depending on the length and inclusions of the tour.
Local Shuttle Services
Once you reach Weipa, consider using local shuttle services that operate between Weipa and Cape York. These shuttles can provide a convenient way to explore the area without the need for your own vehicle. Costs for these shuttles can range from AUD 50 to AUD 100 each way, depending on the distance and service provided.
