    Getting There

    Driving

    To reach Boolimba Bluff, first drive to the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area. From the Carnarvon Highway, the 45km road to the park entrance is sealed and suitable for all vehicles. The visitor area is located 5.9km from the park entrance. There is no entrance fee to Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Parking is available at the visitor area. From the visitor area, the Boolimba Bluff track starts 1km along the Main Gorge Track. No fuel is available after leaving Injune or Rolleston.

    Walking

    From the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area, follow the Main Gorge Track for 1km. The Boolimba Bluff track is signposted to your right. The track then gradually rises for another 1km around the base of the cliff before a steep 300m section climbs to the plateau with steps and ladders. The final 1.1km is an easy walk through low scrub to the lookouts. Ensure you have adequate water and appropriate footwear for the challenging climb.

    Start the Boolimba Bluff hike early, especially for sunrise, to avoid the heat and witness the best light on the sandstone cliffs.
    Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy, ankle-supporting footwear due to the steep and rocky terrain.

    Boolimba Bluff, located within Carnarvon National Park, offers a challenging yet rewarding hike to the top of the gorge, approximately 200 meters above Carnarvon Creek. The 6.4 km return track branches off from the Main Gorge Track and involves a steep climb with over 300 steps and several ladders. Named the 'Roof of Queensland,' the bluff provides panoramic views of the Carnarvon Gorge and distant ranges like the Expedition Range. From the summit, you can see how Carnarvon Creek winds through the park. Interpretive signs along the way offer insights into the geology of the gorge. The hike begins with a relatively easy walk along the main track before arriving at the side track that leads to the bluff. The ascent involves navigating rocky sections and a steep climb through a slot in the cliffs. It's recommended to allow around 3 hours for the complete walk. The best time to experience Boolimba Bluff is during sunrise when the sandstone cliffs glow with pastel pink hues. European explorer Ludwig Leichhardt passed to Carnarvon Gorge's east in 1844, naming the Expedition Ranges visible in the distance from Boolimba Bluff.
