Car
If you're traveling by car, start by heading towards the town of Rolleston from any location in Southern Queensland. From Rolleston, take the Carnarvon Highway (A7) heading towards Injune. After approximately 70 kilometers, turn onto the Carnarvon Gorge Road. Follow this road for about 30 kilometers until you reach the entrance to Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Park your vehicle at the designated parking area near the visitor information center. From the visitor center, you will need to follow the marked walking trail towards Wards Canyon, which is about a 3-kilometer walk, taking approximately 1-2 hours depending on your pace.
Public Transportation
For those relying on public transportation, catch a bus from major cities like Brisbane or Rockhampton to Rolleston. Once in Rolleston, you can either book a local taxi or rideshare service to reach the Carnarvon Gorge Road. The taxi ride will take you to the entrance of Carnarvon Gorge National Park. After arriving, you will still need to walk approximately 3 kilometers on the marked trail to reach Wards Canyon. Ensure to check the bus schedules in advance as services may not be frequent.
Guided Tour
Another option is to join a guided tour, which can be booked from larger cities such as Brisbane or Rockhampton. These tours typically include transportation to and from Carnarvon Gorge, along with a guided walk to Wards Canyon. This is a great choice for those who prefer not to drive or navigate public transport. Prices for these tours can vary, so check with local tour operators for specific costs and availability.
