Discover more about Nadgee wilderness walk

The Nadgee Wilderness Walk is a spectacular 55km coastal hike that spans the untouched coastline between Merrica River in New South Wales and Mallacoota in Victoria. This challenging 3-4 day trek is not for the faint-hearted, demanding experience in backpacking and navigation. The reward, however, is immersion in one of the most pristine and isolated coastal environments Australia has to offer. The walk traverses the Nadgee Nature Reserve, the only remaining coastal wilderness area in NSW, before crossing into Victoria. Here, hikers discover a diverse landscape of remote beaches, rugged coastlines, tranquil lagoons, and shifting sand dunes. Birdwatchers will be in paradise, with hundreds of seabird species, including short-tailed shearwaters, sooty oystercatchers, and gannets, frequently sighted along the route. Keep an eye out for eastern water dragons basking on rocks near creeks, pods of dolphins playing offshore, and whales migrating between May and November. Overnight camping is essential, with designated campgrounds like Little Creek Estuary, Bunyip Hole, and Nadgee River offering memorable resting spots. Be prepared for varying terrain, including soft sandy stretches and potentially windy conditions, especially on exposed dunes. Always check weather conditions and be aware that the Merrica River can become impassable after heavy rain. Before embarking on this wilderness adventure, hikers should contact the NPWS Merimbula office for permits and information on current conditions. Ensure you have appropriate gear, including topographic maps, a compass/GPS, and sufficient water.
