Discover more about Hummock Hill Lookout

Hummock Hill Lookout, located on Queen Elizabeth Drive in Whyalla, South Australia, offers visitors a unique blend of scenic beauty and historical significance. The hill itself was the site of Whyalla's first European settlement at the turn of the 20th century. Later, during World War II, it served as a gun battery and observation post, playing a role in Australia's defense. The development of the lookout utilized the old gun emplacements, which can still be seen today. In 1802, Matthew Flinders surveyed Hummock Hill. Iron ore was discovered nearby in the mid-1800s, leading BHP to construct a tramway and jetty for mining and shipping. The town of Hummock Hill was established, later changing its name to Whyalla in 1914. In 1986, BHP gifted the site to the City Council during the South Australian Jubilee 150 Royal visit. Today, visitors can enjoy 360-degree views of Whyalla, the industrial expanse of the Whyalla Steelworks, the Whyalla Foreshore and Marina, and the Spencer Gulf. Heritage interpretive signage provides insights into the hill's past. Facilities include a restored wartime gun, sheltered viewing areas, picnic spots, and a telescope. Hummock Hill is also part of the City Walk Centenary Trail.
