Selwyn's Rock / Glacier Rock Viewing Platform

Selwyn's Rock, also referred to as Glacier Rock, is a remarkable geological site located in the picturesque Inman Valley of South Australia. This historical landmark provides visitors with a unique vantage point to observe the rolling hills and vineyards that characterize the region. The rock formation itself is a geological marvel, dating back 500 million years and formed during the Permian period when a massive ice cap, estimated to be 1,500 meters thick, moved across the Fleurieu Peninsula. The movement of the ice sheet dragged the rock from the vicinity of Victor Harbor, leaving grooves, scratches, and crescent-shaped marks on the rock surface and surrounding riverbed, which serve as evidence of the ice's direction. Discovered in 1859 by geologist A.R.C. Selwyn, the rock was later declared one of the world's largest glacial exposures by Dr. Albert Terrones in the 1900s. Selwyn's Rock is not only a testament to the region's ancient past but also holds the distinction of being the first recorded discovery of glaciations in Australia.
