Getting there

Driving

From Hawker, take Wilpena Road approximately 1 km east. Turn right onto the unsealed road signposted 'Desalination Plant'. Continue on this road to the top of the hill. Park at the top of the hill and pass through the access gate on your right. Follow the track towards Castle Rock. Note that the road is unsealed and may be impassable after rain; avoid Yednalue Drive.

Walking

From the Hawker Visitor Information Centre, walk east along Wilpena Road for approximately 1 km. Turn right onto the unsealed road. Follow the road to the top of the hill (approx 1km), then pass through the access gate on your right and proceed along the track towards Castle Rock. Allow approximately 30 minutes for the walk from Hawker.

Castle Rock Lookout is a prominent rock formation located a short distance east of Hawker, South Australia. This easily accessible vantage point provides sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding Flinders Ranges, making it a popular spot for photographers and sightseers.The lookout is reached by a short drive from Hawker, followed by a brief walk. The track leads to the rock formation itself, where visitors can take in the expansive vista. The shelter at the lookout was built by local school students. The views encompass the rugged landscape of the central Flinders Ranges, including Wonoka Bluff to the north, the Wilpena Pound Range to the northeast, and the Yappala and Yourambulla Ranges to the west.Castle Rock's name is derived from its appearance, resembling a castle. The best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon, when the light enhances the colors of the landscape.
