Mount Ohlssen-Bagge: Flinders Ranges Summit

Mount Ohlssen-Bagge, rising prominently within the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, presents an unmissable opportunity for hikers seeking breathtaking views and a taste of the rugged South Australian outback. While not as well-known as St Mary Peak, many argue that it delivers a similar visual payoff with less exertion. The 6.8km hike to the summit begins near the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre. The trail ascends steadily, becoming steeper and rockier as you approach the top. Keep an eye out for native reptiles basking in the sun along the way. The final stretch involves a scramble over some exposed rocks, adding a touch of adventure to the climb. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with unparalleled 360-degree views. Wilpena Pound, a vast natural amphitheater, stretches out below, while the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges create a stunning backdrop. The mountain was originally named Mount Ohlssen-Bagge in 1851 after an engineer who was a business partner of the surveyor Frederick Sinnett. For a time, it was also known as Mount John. While the summer months (December to February) can bring extreme heat, the cooler months from April to October offer ideal hiking conditions.
