Discover more about Lake Allom

Lake Allom, nestled on K'gari (Fraser Island), is a hidden gem for nature lovers seeking tranquility. This perched lake, formed entirely from rainwater, is cradled by lush rainforest, creating a unique and peaceful environment. The surrounding vegetation seeps tannin into the water, giving it a distinctive dark color. Known as 'Turtle Lake', Lake Allom is home to a thriving population of freshwater turtles, easily observed from the viewing platform. The platform was constructed in 2002 to provide a vantage point for wildlife viewing while minimizing contaminants entering the delicate ecosystem. Visitors can often spot Krefft's river turtles, identified by the yellow stripe on their heads, swimming in the calm waters. Feeding the turtles is strictly prohibited to protect the lake's fragile balance. The 1.4km Lake Allom circuit walk allows visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding rainforest, filled with towering kauri and hoop pines. While swimming is permitted, the water's dark color due to tannins may deter some. A designated day-use area provides picnic tables for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. Lake Allom's history is intertwined with the exploration of K'gari. Surveyor Noel Allom first mapped the area in the 1920s, and the lake was later named in his honor. Unlike some other Fraser Island lakes, the traditional Aboriginal name for Lake Allom has been lost. While access to Lake Allom requires a 4WD vehicle and navigating inland tracks, the reward is a less crowded and more intimate experience of K'gari's natural beauty.
