The gallery's permanent collection comprises over 1,700 artworks, with a focus on art related to Gippsland and the natural environment. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, textiles, metalwork, and woodwork. A dedicated space showcases the work of Sale-based textile artist Annemieke Mein OAM. The Gippsland Art Gallery is located in the Wellington Centre, which also houses the Sale Library and Visitor Information Centre. The gallery's location at the Port of Sale offers visitors views of the waterways and parkland. The gallery also runs the Maffra Exhibition Space as an access space for local artists. In 2018, the gallery underwent a major redevelopment, enhancing the visitor experience with increased exhibition spaces and improved access to the gallery's collection.
