Discover more about Derwent Estate Vineyard

Derwent Estate Vineyard, a family-owned and operated wine business, is located in Granton, Tasmania, about 20 minutes north of Hobart. The vineyard's north-facing slopes, which descend to the Derwent River, are ideal for growing cool-climate wine grapes. The estate's history is deeply rooted in Tasmania's past. The cellar door is housed in Rathbone Cottage, a historic cottage built in 1820 on the site of one of the island's first lime quarries. These charming buildings are among the oldest in the Hobart region. The Hanigan family, farmers and grape growers, acquired the Mt. Nassau property in the Derwent Valley in 1913. Derwent Estate is known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sparkling White wines. The estate also produces an intriguing Shiraz-Nebbiolo blend. The winery, constructed from straw bales in 2013, demonstrates the estate's commitment to sustainable practices. The winery's design combines thermal efficiency with environmental harmony, reflecting Derwent Estate's dedication to preserving Tasmania's natural beauty while producing wines that reflect the character of their surroundings. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings at the cellar door, which offers a curated selection of wines in a setting that combines heritage charm with scenic views of the Derwent River. The Shed Restaurant offers a menu crafted by Head Chef Andrew Russell, focusing on locally sourced ingredients paired with Derwent Estate's wines. The dining space, transformed from an original shearing and tractor shed, blends rustic elements with contemporary style, offering a relaxed setting for both casual lunches and special occasions.
