Discover more about Hermit's Cave

Hermit's Cave, perched on Scenic Hill in Griffith, New South Wales, is more than just a cave; it's a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of Valerio Ricetti. From around 1929 to 1952, Ricetti, an Italian migrant, single-handedly transformed this rocky outcrop into a remarkable living space. Ricetti's complex includes rock shelters, some modified into cave-like enclosures, dry-stone walling, stone stairways and paths, terraced gardens, water cisterns, and even remnant plantings. The site stretches across more than a kilometer of the escarpment, showcasing Ricetti's dedication and hard work. Visitors can explore the remains of what Ricetti called the Garden, the Chapel, and the Main Cave. The walls of the Main Cave still bear traces of Ricetti's paintings, including small daisies. Ricetti's reasons for choosing this solitary life remain a subject of local folklore. Some say he sought solitude after years of traveling and laboring jobs. Others suggest his Italian origins and unusual lifestyle made him a target of suspicion during World War II, leading to his internment from 1942 to 1943. Despite the hardships, Ricetti continued to visit Scenic Hill even after his release, considering it his true home. In 1952, he returned to Italy to visit his brother, but he passed away a few months later. Legend has it that his soul remains on 'la mia sacra collina' (my sacred hill). Today, Hermit's Cave is a popular tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the surrounding farmland and the Binya Hills. Visitors can follow a signed heritage trail, but sturdy walking shoes are recommended due to the uneven paths. The site serves as a reminder of one man's determination to create a unique sanctuary in the Australian landscape.
