Discover more about Bombo Headland Geological Site

Bombo Headland Geological Site is a captivating coastal landscape located in Bombo, near Kiama, New South Wales. This heritage-listed site, formerly a quarry, showcases dramatic basalt columns and unique geological formations resulting from volcanic activity millions of years ago. The site provides a stunning visual experience and valuable insights into the region's geological history. The headland's unusual basalt columns create a surreal, moon-like landscape. These formations are a product of the area's mining history, specifically blue metal quarrying in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combined with centuries of exposure to the powerful ocean forces. The site is of research/technical significance due to the numerous dykes which cut the Permian Bombo Latite. One of the dykes contains abundant xenoliths, materials brought up from the Earth's mantle, approximately 80 kilometers below the surface of Eastern Australia. Today, Bombo Headland is a popular destination for photographers, nature enthusiasts, and stargazers. Its rugged cliffs and unique rock formations provide a picturesque backdrop, especially for astrophotography, thanks to minimal light pollution. Visitors can explore the area via walking tracks, with the Bombo Headland Eco Walk providing a staircase that links the quarry to adjacent beaches. The site also offers stunning views of Cathedral Rocks, Jones Beach, Minnamurra Headland, Bombo Beach, and Kiama.
