Alice Springs Reptile Centre Travel Guide

The Alice Springs Reptile Centre is a privately operated reptile center and environmental education facility located in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Founded by Rex Neindorf, a former reptile handler, it opened in January 2000 and has grown to house over 100 reptiles from 60 different species. The center aims to educate visitors about the diverse reptile life of Central Australia, displaying them in recreations of their natural environments. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits, including the Gecko Cave, which showcases different gecko species from around Alice Springs, the Barkly Tablelands, and the Top End. One of the most popular residents is Terry, a large saltwater crocodile, who can be viewed from above and below the water. The center also features large goannas like the Perentie, frill-necked lizards, and desert-dwelling thorny devils. Safely behind glass, you can observe some of the world's most venomous snakes, such as the Inland Taipan, Brown Snake, Death Adder, and Mulga (King Brown) snake.Interactive talks and handling sessions are conducted daily by knowledgeable staff, offering visitors the chance to learn more about these creatures and even handle some of the friendlier reptiles. The center also plays a role in wildlife conservation as a drop-off center for Wildcare Inc. and serves as the official local snake catcher, relocating snakes from homes and businesses.
