Camping fees are $15 per adult per night, $8 per child (5-17 years), and $38 per family (2 adults, 4 kids).

    Local tips

A high-clearance 4WD is essential for accessing Palm Valley due to the rough, sandy track that follows the Finke River bed.
Book your campsite online in advance, as there is no phone or internet reception at the Palm Valley Campground.
The best time to visit is during the cooler months (April to September) to avoid extreme heat.
Bring your own firewood, drinking water and remove all rubbish as bins are not provided.
Check road conditions before you travel, as the access road may be closed after heavy rain.

    Discover more about Palm Valley

Palm Valley, located 138km west of Alice Springs within the Finke Gorge National Park, is a stunning testament to the power of resilience in the Australian Outback. This unique east-west running valley in the Krichauff Range is home to the Red Cabbage Palm (Livistona mariae), found nowhere else in Central Australia. These palms, some up to 300 years old, stand as living relics of a time when rainforests covered this region. The valley's dramatic landscape features towering red sandstone cliffs that rise up to 300 meters, framing a lush oasis fed by underground springs. The Finke River, believed to be one of the oldest river systems in the world, carves its way through the park, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports a variety of plant and animal life. Here you can spot dingoes, goannas, kangaroos, snakes and wallabies. Palm Valley holds deep cultural significance for the Western Arrernte people, the traditional custodians of the land. The valley and its waterholes are considered sacred, with the palms believed to be ancestors in Dreamtime stories. Indigenous rock art and ceremonial sites throughout the park offer glimpses into the region's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore Palm Valley via several walking trails, including the popular Arankaia Walk (2km) and the Mpulungkinya Track (5km), each offering unique perspectives of the valley's beauty. Camping is available at the Palm Valley Campground, providing an opportunity to experience the tranquility of the outback. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife and unique plant species that call this area home. While the origins of the Red Cabbage Palms were once attributed to ancient rainforests, recent genetic analysis suggests they may have been brought to the valley by Aboriginal people around 15,000 years ago, aligning with local Dreamtime stories. Whether a relic or a transported species, these palms create an unforgettable landscape, a true botanical wonder in the heart of Australia.
