The Boonwurrung people, who lived there for over 40,000 years, held corroborees in the area. Following British settlement in 1835, much of the delta was drained for agriculture and housing. The lake was created between 1873 and 1880 by excavating silt from the lagoons to form a permanent body of water. Today, Albert Park Lake is a popular destination for Melburnians and tourists alike. Visitors can enjoy walking, jogging, and cycling along the 4.7km lake path. Water activities such as sailing, rowing, kayaking, and paddle boating are also popular. From Melbourne CBD, drive south along St Kilda Road. Turn left onto Albert Road, which borders the northern edge of Albert Park. Parking is available in various car parks around the park, but fees apply. Parking costs $6.20 per hour on weekdays between 8am and 5pm, with a daily maximum of $14.70. Weekend flat rate is $6.20.
