Public Transport

Melbourne Museum is easily accessible by public transport. Take tram route 86 or 96 to Stop 11, Melbourne Museum, at the corner of Nicholson and Gertrude Streets. Alternatively, take the City Loop train to Parliament Station and walk approximately 15 minutes to the museum. A single fare on trams or buses costs around $5. From Melbourne Central Station, you can catch the line 30 tram.

Walking

Melbourne Museum is located on the edge of the city center and is walkable from many areas. From Melbourne CBD, it's approximately a 20-minute walk. From Melbourne Central Station, the museum is about a 15-minute walk.

Car

If driving, parking is available underneath Melbourne Museum, with entrances via Rathdowne Street or Nicholson Street. As of July 2025, visitors can enjoy $25 parking by validating their ticket at the museum information desk. Standard parking rates apply without validation. Alternatively, Paramount Car Park is within walking distance. Keep in mind that parking within the museum vicinity can be quite costly, with rates reaching up to $43 for a maximum day rate.

Overview

Melbourne Museum, situated in the Carlton Gardens, offers an immersive exploration of Victoria's natural and cultural heritage. Adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building, the museum was established in 2000 and has since become a beloved attraction, receiving the Best Tourist Attraction award in 2011.The museum's exhibits span three floors and cover a wide range of topics. Highlights include the complete Triceratops fossil, the skeleton of a blue whale, and the mounted hide of champion racehorse Phar Lap. The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre showcases the living traditions and knowledge of Koorie people and other cultures from around Australia. The Forest Gallery features a living temperate Victorian forest, complete with native birds and reptiles. Other galleries explore science, life, the human body, and the history of Melbourne.In addition to its permanent collections, Melbourne Museum hosts temporary and touring exhibitions. The museum also houses the world's second-largest IMAX theatre, showing movies and documentaries in large-screen 3-D format. Visitors can also enjoy the museum's cafe and shop.
