The Palais Theatre, located on the Lower Esplanade in St Kilda, Melbourne, is a landmark entertainment venue with a rich history. Opened in 1927 as Palais Pictures, it replaced an earlier cinema that was destroyed by fire. The theatre was designed by Henry Eli White in an ornate, eclectic style typical of 1920s picture palaces. Its architecture features an arched roof and twin-domed towers, echoing the design of nearby Luna Park and other foreshore landmarks. Originally a cinema, the Palais transitioned to a live entertainment venue in the 1950s. The theatre has welcomed stars such as Bob Hope, the Rolling Stones, and Tom Jones. The Palais Theatre was inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame in 2015, cementing its cultural significance. The Palais Theatre can accommodate nearly 3,000 people, making it Australia's largest seated theatre. The interior design blends Spanish, French, Oriental, and Italian influences, creating a unique and visually stunning atmosphere. Recent refurbishments have restored the theatre to its original 1927 color, a sandy tone achieved with a copperas finish.
