Kakadu, Katherine and Litchfield Adventure

Kakadu, Katherine and Litchfield Family Tour

With 5 and 9 year old boys we had limited options while booking a trip to the national parks of the NT. ATA offered a family friendly 4 day, 3 night tour that tailored the hiking and other aspects of the trip to enable younger children to participate. The details of the tour were as follows: Cruise the Mary River wetlands at Corroboree Billabong; Visit Cahill’s Crossing; Discover ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr; Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) was closed so we went to Gunlom Waterfall instead, and the secluded Ikoymarrwa (Moline Rockhole); Take a guided cruise through the dramatic Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park; Relax with a swim at Edith Falls; Explore Litchfield National Park’s termite mounds, Florence Falls, Wangi Falls, and Buley Rockholes; Although each day of the tour had similarities, each stop had its own uniqueness and beauty. I have never swam in so many incredibly beautiful places. The tour was great and catered for younger travelers very well. There was just the right amount of driving, stops, and hiking whereby everyone enjoyed themselves but weren't bored or overtired by the end of the day. Fans in the tents also made the warmer nights much more comfortable. Although the permanent tents were basic they were more than suitable for a comfortable nights sleep. What made the trip a truly amazing experience, and one all 4 of us will cherish forever was two-fold. First was our tour guide Rhett. Tour guide is not a fair description. Rhett is a fountain of knowledge, a musician, a comedian, an entertainer, eccentric, patient and a truly great bloke. During our long drives he shared just enough, but not too much, of the history of a place or interesting facts about the local flora and fauna. He entertained us with his guitar skills and hosted a sing song evening involving the entire group. He opened our minds with his deep interest in the stars, the universe, and what it all means, all while making us laugh out loud with his comedic delivery of Rhett's Guide to the Galaxy. No matter what I write it cannot adequately explain the incredibly positive impact Rhett had on our experience and the enjoyment of our holiday. Rhett is a credit to ATA and you should seek him out for any tour. Second is the group we travelled with. There were 15 of us in total, made up of 4 families. The kids immediately got on, which is their way, and during breaks, dinner, and the tour stops the adults slowly but surely started chatting away and getting to know each other. We enjoyed dinner as a group each night, helped tidy up, and hung out at each swimming spot. We were so fortunate to travel with such a cool group who only enhanced the entire experience. I would highly recommend this tour, providing you like swimming, and could not recommend Rhett more highly. What a legend. Rockodile Dundee!

5 Day Kakadu Katherine Gorge Litchfield 4WD Camping Adventure

Amazing outback bush adventure with Leigh in the Top End!

Our tour guide Leigh is the best tour guide that I have ever met! He is extremely knowledgeable about the region, and know so much details about the area's ecology, culture and history. He is the abosolute highlight of the tour, who is friendly, passionate, lovely and energetic. I strongly recommend he is the first person to go with if you want to visit the Top End region. The trip allowed me as an international person from China who has been living in Melbourne in the past 7 years to explore the outback culture of Australia, which is quite distinctive from the East Coast. This is an amazing trip to see the Top End (The northern part of the Northern Territory) landscapes and cultures of Australia. The region has an robust, free, and tranquil mood. We went through different national parks and swim in diverse waterholes, which was my first time to swim in the wild. It feels amazing to swim in rocky lakes and ponds with transparent water and fish. The landscape is composed of rivers, swamps, Savannah woodland, monsoon forests, rocky outcrops, waterholes and termite mounds. We saw wild buffaloes, saltwater crocodiles, wallabies and many birds. The trip also feels very cultural: we went to see many rock arts as well as visited many aboriginal art galleries, and I bought my first Didgeridoo at Top End Digi Art Gallery. Leigh gave them a phone call and they opened 1 hour after the conventional opening hours to do me a favor, which is so lovely. For anybody going after a digi, I would recommend mail it to your place instead of carry it with airplane: the domestic postage cost 100$, while airline Qantas which I took need to charge 130$ to handle the digi as an oversize package. This is also the first time I had an Australian damper made in a camp fire, Yum!

Litchfield National Park Waterfalls & Wildlife Adventure Tour

Thoroughly enjoyable experience

My spouse and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. It was the right length with great variety that showed off the NT landscape and wildlife. Our guide and driver, Tim, grew up in Darwin and shared many personal stories of both the city and the nearby bush, including his own and his family experiences of Cyclone Tracey and its aftermath - it really helped make the experience memorable. Make sure to bring a water bottle - it doesn’t have to be a large one tho, as enough fresh cold water was provided onboard for much-needed refills.
