Getting there

Train from Zell am See

Take the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (local railway) from Zell am See to Krimml. The train runs hourly along one of the world's most scenic railways, covering 53 kilometres through the Pinzgau grass mountains alongside the Salzach River. Journey time approximately 1 hour. From Krimml train station, follow signs to the waterfall parking areas (approximately 10-15 minute walk or short shuttle bus ride available seasonally).

Car via Gerlos Alpine Road

Drive from Zell am See via the Gerlos Alpine Road (Road 165), one of the most scenic panoramic routes in the East Alps. This toll road costs 12 EUR per vehicle and takes approximately 1 hour. The route passes between Salzburg and Tyrol with dramatic mountain scenery. Follow signs to Krimml and designated parking areas P1-P5 upon arrival. Parking costs 6-7 EUR or is included in combi-tickets.

Car via standard route

Drive from Zell am See via Road 165 toward Wald im Pinzgau, then follow signs to Krimml. This is a longer but toll-free alternative to the Gerlos Alpine Road, taking approximately 1.5 hours. The road is mountainous and winding. Multiple parking options available at the waterfall site, with fees of 6-7 EUR or included in combi-tickets.

Nostalgic steam train experience

Seasonal nostalgic steam train service operates between Zell am See and Krimml during summer months, offering a unique journey through the Pinzgau valley. Check official schedules for operating dates and times. This combines transport with heritage experience, though journey times are longer than the regular Pinzgauer Lokalbahn.

The Spectacle of Water and Stone

Krimml Waterfalls stands as a monument to nature's raw power, with water cascading 380 metres down the Krimmler River in three distinct stages—upper, middle, and lower falls. The upper cataract alone drops 140 metres, creating a mesmerising display of mist, spray, and roaring water that echoes through the valley. Located within the protected boundaries of Hohe Tauern National Park in the Salzburger Pinzgau region, these falls represent Europe's highest waterfall and rank fifth globally among all waterfalls.

A Journey Through Alpine Wilderness

The experience begins at Kürsingerplatz, where visitors encounter their first dramatic viewpoint of the lower falls—a moment that immediately conveys the scale of what lies ahead. The 4-kilometre hiking trail that follows is remarkably accessible, climbing steadily through dense forest alongside the roaring river. Multiple platforms and viewing stations punctuate the route, each offering fresh perspectives on the cascading water. The trail passes through ecosystems featuring 327 different moss species, diverse birdlife, and wetland vegetation unique to this microclimate. Wooden guardrails and well-maintained pathways ensure safe passage even as the mist intensifies with proximity to the falls.

Historical Significance and Romantic Legacy

Until the late eighteenth century, these waterfalls remained largely unknown due to their remote mountain location. The nineteenth-century Romantic movement transformed Krimml's fortunes, as artists and poets sought out powerful natural environments for inspiration. This artistic discovery sparked tourism that continues to this day, with the falls now welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who come to witness the same dramatic beauty that captivated earlier generations.

The Alpine Hut Experience

Approximately 30 to 40 minutes along the trail, visitors reach Schönangerl alpine hut, which marks the middle falls and represents the halfway point of the full ascent. This traditional mountain refuge offers refreshment, meals, and even swimming opportunities in the glacial waters. Beyond this point, the trail continues to the upper falls, rewarding those with sufficient time and energy with increasingly spectacular vistas across the Krimmler Achental—a high alpine valley of lush meadows and meandering streams.

Sensory and Health Benefits

The waterfalls function as a natural therapy environment, where the combination of negative ions from the mist, the sound of cascading water, and the surrounding forest creates a restorative atmosphere. The sheer volume of water—450,000 cubic metres plunging over the valley annually—generates a palpable energy that visitors experience through sight, sound, and the cool mist that envelops the trail.

Visitor Infrastructure and Access

The Krimml Worlds of Water visitor complex at the entrance provides modern facilities including a Waterfall Center with observation telescopes offering 3-D projection views of the falls, the House of Water with interactive exhibits, and an outdoor Aquapark. Multiple parking areas accommodate the high volume of visitors, with a combi-ticket system offering convenient access to both the visitor attractions and the waterfall trail itself.
