Discover more about Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a testament to Salzburg's rich history and architectural beauty. Built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his mistress Salome Alt, the palace was initially named Altenau Palace. The name Mirabell, derived from Italian, combines 'mirabile' (admirable) and 'bella' (beautiful). Over the centuries, the palace has undergone several transformations. In 1721, Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach commissioned a Baroque redesign by Lukas von Hildebrandt, creating the cohesive complex seen today. A fire in 1818 caused significant damage, but the Marble Hall and the grand marble staircase survived. The palace was subsequently restored, with Peter de Nobile contributing to its present elegant appearance. The Marble Hall, once the Prince-Archbishop's ballroom, is now a renowned wedding hall and concert venue. Leopold Mozart and his children, Wolfgang and Nannerl, performed here. The Angel Staircase, adorned with cherubs by Georg Raphael Donner, leads to the Marble Hall. Mirabell Gardens, designed in 1687 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and redesigned around 1690, feature geometrically arranged gardens. Highlights include the Grand Parterre, Pegasus Fountain, Hedge Theatre, and Dwarf Garden. The gardens gained further fame as a filming location for 'The Sound of Music'. Maria and the children famously sang 'Do-Re-Mi' around the Pegasus Fountain. Today, Mirabell Palace houses the offices of the Salzburg mayor and the municipal administration. The Marble Hall hosts weddings, conferences, concerts, and award ceremonies.
